Braids are so powerful. As history tells, they have been around since 3500 BC. Braids told stories of the slaves who used patterns in their hair to tell directions, store food and more. They became very prevalent in pop culture around 1970. Cicely Tyson, a well known black actor, wore cornrows and a headscarf. This spiked many other artists and actors to start wearing braids. In the 90s, Janet Jackson became known for her popular film "Poetic Justice" where she wore long box braids. These braids are sometimes called “Poetic Justice” braids when referring the style to others. Another very inspirational person to black hair in pop culture is Brandy also known as Moesha. Brandy starred as the main character in her show “Moesha”, where she wore braids during each season. These styles are still heavily worn today and have changed a lot over the years.
